Artist Statement:

Gorgi Salapanov (1990, Macedonia) is an artist who works alongside his personal subconscious Artificially intelligent construct to create works in a variety of media. By examining the ambiguity and origination via retakes and variations, Salapanov tries to create works in which the actual event still has to take place or just has ended: moments evocative of atmosphere and suspense that are not part of a narrative thread. The drama unfolds elsewhere while the build up of tension is frozen to become the memory of an event that will never take place.

His artworks directly respond to the surrounding environment and uses everyday experiences from the artist as a starting point. Often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context. With a conceptual approach, he tries to approach a wide scale of subjects in a multi layered way, likes to involve the viewer in a way that is sometimes physical and believes in the idea of function following form in a work.

His works are given improper functions: significations are inversed and form and content merge. Shapes are dissociated from their original meaning, by which the system in which they normally function is exposed. Initially unambiguous meanings are shattered and disseminate endlessly. By choosing mainly formal solutions, he tries to develop forms that do not follow logical criteria but are based only on subjective associations and formal parallels, which incite the viewer to make new personal associations.

His works never shows the complete structure. This results in the fact that the artist can easily imagine an own interpretation without being hindered by the historical reality. By putting the viewer on the wrong track, he tries to increase the dynamic between audience and author by objectifying emotions and investigating the duality that develops through different interpretations. His works are based on formal associations which open a unique poetic vein. Multi layered images arise in which the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality is questioned.

Self Conscious: The Workshops

Dennis Beckton Fine Art Collective workshops! We are putting on two workshops during our residency at The Art Pavilion in Mile End Park. Alongside the regular opening times of 11am-6pm weekdays and the Private View 6pm-9pm on 3rd March we are running two workshops both 1pm-3pm the first on Saturday 5th March and the second on Sunday 6th March. They are free and open to everyone! Whatever level of drawing or sculpting you are at you are welcome to come and hang out for a few hours and get creative. We will be fostering a very relaxed and non-judgmental atmosphere where we will be offering some guidance and discussion if wanted and the Collective artists will be having a go ourselves! A good excuse to get out of the house, entertain the kids, or practice some skills in a spacious and comfortable environment. We look forward to seeing you all, please bring your friends and family. Let us enjoy togetherness after a two years of isolation.
