Artist statement:
Erin Roche-Winson’s (°1996, London United Kingdom) work, takes its inspiration from the particular viewpoint of a female boxer, showcasing the stereotypes that she faces within the traditionally perceived male arena of boxing her work leads us to question gender inequalities in daily life. With a focus on painting's, (powerful and bold punch mark on the canvas and striking colour selective colouring. using her old junior boxing gloves) she has experimented widely with other mediums throughout her though lockdown with her recent ‘action paintings’.
The theme of boxing integral to her practice, has pushed her work even further, and whilst focusing on constructing work, with a reference to this passion for boxing she has continued to develop exploratory ways to bring together her love of the sport whilst at the same time challenging the gender roles within it.
Creating hard ‘masculine’ pieces with a gendered twist she opens up the debate for us. She has taken the self-aware meta art by using a kitchen aprons for her canvas by blending the two technical terms from the canvas one beginning from the domestic side and the other beginning from the boxing side.
The piece indicates some people thought on where a woman’s place should be and the boxing name of the fabric around the ring. She shows a duality between the domestic and the masculine delicate punch paintings.
