Artist Statement:

I am a conceptual artist with a passion for installation art working with mediums such as clay, wood and acrylics. Recycled materials found in my home or my environment are also included in my pieces. Currently I am in the process of teaching myself how to paint realistic portraits with a brush as I usually do finger painting, sculpture or charcoal portraits.

From the start, I used art as a means to turn my faded childhood memories into a narrative. I intend to make more pieces in the future that share information of the economy of my birthplace, the Philippines such as "OvercrowdinG" which was made to portray families in the country squeezing together in small homes due to poverty and overcrowding. However, in my piece we see my family in the UK cramped together instead which is a situation I imagined would have happened to our family of six, had my parents not decided to work abroad for our future.

The concept of my installation works from my very first one to now have all been about discovering my identity and retracing my origins. "Ari's Sari-Sari Stall" was made with the intention of bringing a part of the Philippines here, to the UK. Liaising with friends on holiday from Philippines, I gathered products that Sari-Sari stores would normally have so that I could share a part of my culture through staple filipino products. The audience would also be able to experience buying daily necessities from the stall.

The photo-manipulated pieces, "Micro-worlds", were made in response to being in lockdown and my desire to be transported to another world, even it was within confines of my back-garden. Here, I have imagined exploring landscapes full of dead branches and empty bird houses from the hanging flowerbeds.

A treasured piece of mine to further reflect my present theme would be the "Dirt-Globes". They are sculptures of houses in the slums made of clay that are immersed in water with glitter to symbolise the piles of rubbish the slums are surrounded in. The house in the first image is based on the rubbish-pollution in the Pasig river which was just recently cleaned up.
